Spatial Inc. licences Metrocad's Reverse Engineering Technology

BOULDER, CO: October 19, 1999 - Spatial Inc. (AMEX: STY), the world's leading software developer of open, component 3D modeling technology and interoperability solutions, today announced that it has licensed the core reverse engineering software developed by Metrocad GmbH., and taken over the development expertise for that product. The Metrocad technology will enable further diversification and advancement for Spatial by providing leading-edge reverse engineering as part of the ACISr suite of 3D modeling tools, the de facto 3D solid modeling kernel for the CAD/CAM/CAE industries.

David Prawel, Vice President of Business Development, Spatial Inc., commented, "Metrocad represents an important step forward for Spatial in its mission to ensure continuity throughout the manufacturing business process. A digital model of a part has become a principal requirement for large-scale manufacturing. If an existing part does not already have a digital description, it cannot be easily or economically manufactured, so reverse engineering using technology such as Metrocad becomes a vital part of the manufacturing supply chain."

The Metrocad technology generates a 3D CAD model from an existing physical part by taking data from a CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), and measuring and analyzing the dense discrete point data to derive the model. This allows creation of accurate representations of the physical part within a CAD application, which can then be manipulated, improved and sent forward for mass manufacturing. Metrocad combines advanced technologies including complex spline functions, data reduction, scattered data and feature analysis. Metrocad GmbH is based in Saarbrucken, Germany.

ACIS licensees are set to benefit from the advanced surfacing functionality and increased productivity gains offered by the Metrocad reverse engineering technology. The Metrocad technology will be offered as a separately priced Husk for the ACIS 3D Toolkit.

Steve Hull, General Manager , Metrocad GmbH, said, "The licensing of the Metrocad technology and acquisition of the development expertise by Spatial Inc. represents an important step in achieving a much broader distribution of this unique technology. It also ensures that Metrocad will secure important technological advancements."
