EDG Case History Receives 4th Editor's Choice Award from Plant-Design.Com
Review Documents Transferability of 3D Skills from One CAD System to Another Houston, TX, November 1, 1999. Information Assets, Inc. (IAI) has announced the Plant-Design.Com October, 1999, "Editors' Choice" award for Case Histories goes Engineering Development Group (EDG), Inc., Metairie, LA. The award acknowledges high returns on automation investment and superior quality in documenting results. Plant-Design.Com hosts news, case histories, employment, and events of interest to the plant design and engineering community. The case history documented an example of an 3D literate engineering company successfully using a client-specified system and product data model without degrading cost or schedule. Dr. William G. Beazley, President of IAI and Editor of Plant-Design.Com, said, "Plant-Design.Com searches for high return applications of automation technologies supporting plant design. EDG is an excellent example of how, with vendor-supplied training and support and client-supplied product data, capable engineering firms can meet client requirements and deliverable formats without cost and schedule creep. In other words, it is the skill in using the tools which matters most." EDG provided facilities engineering, design, and drafting support for a Marathon production module that would add capacity to an existing offshore deepwater platform in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Models of the existing offshore production facility, designed by another engineering firm in 1993, had been created using PDMS (a Cadcentre plant design software environment), so Marathon specified that EDG also use PDMS to design the new module. Members of EDG's design/drafting staff were already well-grounded in 3D CAD, although they had never before used PDMS. Cadcentre provided initial training for 6 EDG people. Once the project was under way, a Cadcentre consultant stayed at EDG for a week to help get the project off to a good start.
